Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan avoided directly answering whether Armenia would formally apply to leave the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), speaking at a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.
A Bloomberg journalist asked whether, if re-elected, Pashinyan would be ready to formally apply for EU membership and withdraw from the EAEU, according to Sputnik Armenia.
“From the perspective of Armenia–European Union relations, there is enormous potential. I am confident that we will implement serious, strategically significant projects. Today we had the opportunity to discuss the concepts of these projects and confirmed that we share a common understanding and should move in that direction,” Pashinyan said in response.
He then shifted to discussing the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace process.
On April 1, talks between Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin were held in Moscow, during which Putin stated that Armenia cannot simultaneously be part of both the EU and the EAEU. Pashinyan, in turn, noted that Yerevan understands this incompatibility but said the process has not yet reached a stage where a choice must be made.
