Delegation raises rights of displaced Artsakh Armenians

The committee for the protection of the rights of the people of Artsakh discussed the return of displaced residents and urgent humanitarian issues during meetings in Switzerland, former Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian said on Facebook.

The committee, together with a delegation led by Artsakh National Assembly Speaker Ashot Danielyan, paid a working visit to Switzerland.

According to the committee, meetings with international humanitarian organizations focused on ensuring the collective right of Artsakh Armenians to return and addressing the humanitarian situation in the region.

Discussions also covered the immediate release of Armenian prisoners of war and detainees held in Azerbaijan, clarification of the fate of missing persons, and the protection of Artsakh’s cultural and religious heritage.

On April 30, an event dedicated to Artsakh was held at the Swiss Federal Parliament, attended by Swiss lawmakers, experts, representatives of the Armenian community, and the organization Christian Solidarity International.

At the opening, MPs Erich Fontobel and Stefan Müller-Altermatt criticized what they described as inaction by the international community. Fontobel said: “Switzerland has the expertise, traditions, and trust to help make such a peace process possible, and taking on this role is our duty.”

From the Armenian side, speeches were delivered by Ashot Danielyan, Lernik Hovhannisyan, and committee members Armine Aleksanyan, Garnik Kerkonyan, and Mario Nalbandyan, who presented the current situation of Artsakh Armenians and stressed the importance of a dignified return.

At the end of the visit, the delegation reaffirmed its position that the Artsakh issue remains unresolved and must stay on the international agenda until the population returns and a just solution based on international law is achieved.

On the same day, the European Parliament adopted a resolution reaffirming support for the rights of Artsakh Armenians, including identity and property protection, and called for ensuring their safe, unimpeded, and dignified return with international guarantees. It also called for accountability regarding the destruction of Armenian cultural and religious heritage and proposed an international assessment mission.
