Armenia will decide on possible European Union membership at the appropriate time while remaining in the EAEU, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said.
Commenting on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s remarks that Armenia should determine whether to remain in the EAEU or move toward the EU, Mirzoyan said Yerevan’s position had not changed, News.am reports.
“We have always said that when the moment comes for Armenia to make a choice between the EAEU and the EU, we will make it. Today is May 10, we are a member of the EAEU, no one has told us: leave tomorrow,” he said.
Mirzoyan added that it is no secret the Armenian people have European aspirations.
On May 9, Putin said it would be fair both to Armenian citizens and to Moscow, Armenia’s main economic partner, for Yerevan to clarify its position on EU membership as soon as possible.
On May 7, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the Armenian authorities’ current foreign policy course would eventually lead to the country’s irreversible involvement in Brussels’ anti-Russian agenda. According to her, such a scenario would bring political and economic consequences for Armenia.
During a meeting with Nikol Pashinyan on April 1, Putin stated that simultaneous membership in both the EU and the EAEU was impossible.
