Sophia of Kyiv adds Armenian audio excursion

One of Ukraine’s largest museum complexes, the National Reserve Sophia of Kyiv, has launched an official Armenian-language audio excursion, AnalitikaUA reported.

Visitors can explore the cathedral’s rich history, ancient frescoes and mosaics in Armenian through two formats: online from anywhere in the world via the museum’s official website, or on-site by scanning special QR codes installed throughout the complex.

According to the publication, the initiative offers a valuable opportunity for both the Armenian community in Ukraine and Armenians worldwide to discover one of Eastern Europe’s most important religious landmarks in their native language.

The report also noted that ancient Armenian graffiti inscriptions have been preserved on the cathedral’s walls to this day.

“Anna Porphyrogenita, who descended from the Armenian-origin Macedonian dynasty, played a key role in the Christianization and cultural development of Kyivan Rus. After marrying Prince Vladimir the Great, she brought Byzantine and Armenian architectural and artistic traditions to Kyiv. The masters who arrived in Kyiv thanks to her significantly influenced local architecture.

The ancient Armenian inscriptions preserved on the cathedral walls, as well as decorative elements, testify to the Armenian cultural presence and deep historical footprint.

A modern symbol of this connection is the Armenian khachkar donated to the cathedral by the Union of Armenians of Ukraine and consecrated in 2018,” the publication said.
