Armenia does not intend to “divorce” any of its partners, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said while responding to recent remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Our policy and diplomacy have never recognized such divorces throughout history. We also do not intend to introduce such confrontation — or, more accurately, tension — into Russia-Armenia relations. We are partners connected by numerous ties and are committed to discussing in a healthy environment how to develop these relations in a mutually beneficial way. Of course, there are problems, and problems exist in all possible relationships around the world, as has always been the case. Solutions to these issues must be found through constructive discussions,” he said, according to Radar Armenia.
According to Mirzoyan, all parties should respect the right of the other side to make independent decisions on various issues.
Regarding a possible choice between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, Mirzoyan said that when the time comes to make such a decision, it will be made accordingly.
“And it is not for outsiders to tell us about this,” he added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier stated that it would be right for Armenian citizens if Yerevan clarified its position on joining the European Union. Putin said Armenia’s plans regarding EU membership “require special discussion.”
“For example, a referendum could be held. It is not our business, but in principle it would be entirely logical to hold a referendum and ask Armenian citizens what their choice will be. Based on that, we would draw conclusions and proceed along the path of a soft, civilized and mutually beneficial ‘divorce.’ After all, do you understand that we are now experiencing everything that happened in the Ukrainian direction? And how did it all begin? With Ukraine joining or attempting to join the EU,” he said.
