During a working meeting chaired by Deputy Interior Minister Armen Ghazaryan on May 19, officials discussed the possible introduction of an e-gate system at border checkpoints, including technical solutions and operational components.
The meeting was attended by Migration and Citizenship Service head Nelli Davtyan, Information Systems Regulation Commission chairman Nerses Yeritsyan and representatives of partner agencies.
Participants emphasized that the use of the e-gate system would make it possible to automate border control procedures, reduce citizen service times and improve identification mechanisms.
It was also noted that the system would allow biometric identification to be carried out automatically.
The discussion also addressed issues related to technical maintenance and software support. Officials stressed that implementing data processing, risk assessment and management mechanisms would be essential for the effective operation of the system, helping accelerate border control procedures.
The importance of strengthening interagency cooperation and applying international experience in border management was also highlighted.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants agreed to continue work on the introduction of the e-gate system.
Starting in autumn 2026, Armenia plans to introduce new red biometric passports that will comply with high international standards while also reflecting Armenian identity. The design includes the outline map of Armenia, the alphabet created by Mesrop Mashtots and the first Armenian sentence: “To know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding.” Existing blue passports will remain valid until their expiration dates.
