Investigators open treason case against Tevanyan

The Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings against Andranik Tevanyan under articles on high treason and espionage.

According to a report received from the National Security Service, Armenian citizen A.T., a politician who supported the Hayastan alliance of parties in the 2021 parliamentary elections and was included on the same alliance’s nationwide electoral list as a National Assembly deputy, was recruited by foreign special services in 2024. Acting on the instructions of a representative of foreign special services who serves as director of the «Russia Caucasus» geopolitical center, he allegedly carried out espionage during the same period. He also allegedly unlawfully collected and, in exchange for an especially large sum of $622,000, transferred Russian-translated information containing state secrets about the course and results of hearings held at a closed, secret National Assembly session in April 2024, thereby committing high treason against Armenia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and external security.

Based on the report received from the National Security Service, the Main Department for the Investigation of Crimes Against the State, the Foundations of the Constitutional Order and Public Security of Armenia’s Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings on elements of high treason (Article 418, Part 1) and espionage (Article 424, Part 1).

On May 20, during a rally in Vanadzor, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the National Security Service would send a crime report to the Investigative Committee, expecting a criminal case to be opened against Andranik Tevanyan. Andranik Tevanyan is number two on the electoral list of the Prosperous Armenia Party.

Tevanyan was elected to the National Assembly on June 20, 2021, through the nationwide electoral list of the Hayastan alliance of parties. However, on August 17, 2023, he gave up his parliamentary mandate.
