Shoigu calls U.S.-Armenia deal election support

On May 28 in Moscow, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu described the strategic partnership document signed between the United States and Armenia as a form of election-related support.

“It looks more like some kind of election campaign measure or support,” Shoigu told reporters, according to Interfax.

He said it is currently difficult to conduct an in-depth assessment of the document because its details have not yet been disclosed.

Shoigu also stressed that a strategic partnership agreement should contain separate and thoroughly developed areas of cooperation.

“We have not seen that yet,” he said.

Earlier, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a number of documents related to bilateral cooperation during a meeting in Yerevan. In particular, they initialed the framework agreement on strategic cooperation under the TRIPP project, the Charter on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Armenia and the United States, and a framework memorandum on securing supplies in the extraction and processing of critical minerals and rare earth elements.
