Russian base in Armenia to remain operational: Shoigu

The Russian military base in Armenia remains operational and serves the country's security interests, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu said.

He added that he currently sees no reason to believe that the Russian military base in Armenia could end its activities, according to Interfax.

“Regarding the Russian military base, it is alive, functioning and carrying out its duties. We do not see any such prerequisites at this point. The base exists and is there for Armenia’s security,” Shoigu told reporters.

Russia’s 102nd military base, located in the Armenian city of Gyumri, has been operating since 1995. In 2011, the agreement governing the base’s presence in Armenia was extended until 2044.
