Iran opposes outside involvement in South Caucasus

Iran opposes the involvement of extra-regional powers in processes taking place in the South Caucasus, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said during a press conference, according to News.am .

Baghaei once again reaffirmed that Tehran’s position on developments in the South Caucasus remains unchanged.

“We support the prompt signing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. We also support the development of transport links if they contribute to economic growth, do not affect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, and do not alter the region’s geopolitical landscape,” he said.

According to the diplomat, the involvement of actors from outside the region runs counter to the interests of security and development in the South Caucasus.

He stressed that Iran is closely monitoring developments and remains in close contact with both Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a number of documents at Yerevan’s Zvartnots Airport. Among them were the framework agreement on strategic cooperation related to the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity project and the Charter on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Armenia and the United States.
