Yerevan sees no immediate EAEU exit scenario

Armenia will address the question of choosing between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union only if the issue is posed in a decisive manner, Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan said in an interview in Astana.

“When matters reach the point where this question is raised decisively, there will be clarity on the issue, and at that time we will conduct stress tests as well, if such a need arises. At present, we are simply not considering such a scenario,” Armenia’s deputy prime minister said, according to TASS.

According to him, the issue of Armenia leaving the Eurasian Economic Union has not been raised at this stage.

On May 28, the leaders of the EAEU member states adopted a statement urging Armenia to hold a nationwide referendum as soon as possible on whether to join the European Union or remain in the EAEU.

The joint statement published on the Kremlin website said that representatives of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia are to prepare, by December 2026, a report on the possible consequences for Armenia if its participation in the EAEU is suspended. The document emphasized that such measures are being discussed because of risks to the economic security of the union’s member states linked to Yerevan’s plans to join the European Union.
