Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Armenia should be supported amid statements coming from Russia. He made the remarks in a post on his X account.
He noted that Russia is now threatening neighboring countries more openly than before, according to Armenpress.
“Russia is now threatening its neighboring countries more openly than before. Every neighbor of Russia has heard what was said about Armenia, whose people alone have the right to decide and choose their country’s future. What Russia says about Armenia is, in fact, not only about Armenia,” Zelenskyy wrote.
He added that under the current circumstances, no country or people should be left without support. In his view, Europe has no right to lose any of its peoples or ignore any state.
“Armenia should be supported. Moldova should be supported. The Baltic states. Azerbaijan should be supported. We must find ways to support the people of Georgia as well, and this is a common European challenge. No one should be lost,” the Ukrainian president asserted.
In recent days, Russia, through various officials, including President Vladimir Putin, has called on the Armenian authorities to make a decision as quickly as possible regarding a choice between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union.
On May 29, during a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana, the presidents of four EAEU member states — Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan — adopted a statement regarding Armenia’s situation. Armenia was urged to hold a referendum as soon as possible on choosing between the EAEU and the European Union.
Russian officials have also stated in recent days that if Armenia continues moving toward the European Union, it could lose the opportunity to purchase Russian gas on preferential terms.
In addition, Russia has imposed restrictions on imports of Armenian products. In particular, imports of Jermuk mineral water, flowers and certain alcoholic beverages from Armenia have been banned. Restrictions have also been introduced on several agricultural products, including tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries.
