PPА denounces violence against opposition in Masis

The Prosperous Armenia Party condemned the attack on members of the Strong Armenia party in Masis, calling for a swift investigation and restraint ahead of the elections.

The party's campaign headquarters said political competition should be based on ideas, programs and visions rather than force or intimidation.

“Regardless of political views or party affiliation, such incidents are unacceptable and cannot be justified under any circumstances.

Violence directed at an opposition group undermines not only that organization but also political pluralism and the principle of free elections.

We call on law enforcement agencies to promptly establish all circumstances of the incident and hold those responsible accountable under the law.

With only days remaining before the elections, restraint, responsibility and mutual respect are more important than ever. We urge political parties and their supporters not to succumb to provocations, to maintain political civility and to prevent violence and hostility from overshadowing the electoral process.

As the future of our state and people is being shaped, it is essential that political processes take place in a peaceful, fair, lawful and democratic environment. Armenia must preserve an atmosphere of solidarity, mutual respect and tolerance,” the statement said.

On June 2, activists of the opposition Strong Armenia alliance were attacked in Masis. The local head of the Yerkrapah Volunteer Union reportedly took an active part in the incident. Several activists were injured, including one person who suffered a broken rib.

Interior Ministry spokesperson Narek Sargsyan said reports concerning the incident had been forwarded to the investigative authorities.
